I’m not usually one to rain on a good parade. I like to let the people have their fun, if there’s fun to be had. But, news broke earlier this week that Sonic is planning to unleash a pickle juice slush upon the world in June. And, well….folks….I just have to let my opinion be known.
Sonic says it will be releasing a pickle-flavored slush this summer.
Friday, the chain said the new pickle juice slush will be available in restaurants by early June.
“Quite simply, pickle juice is fun,” Scott Uehlein, Sonic’s vice president of product innovation and development said. “Nothing says summer like a Sonic slush.”
The new flavor will be served at 3,500 Sonic locations nationwide. According to Food & Wine, which got a sneak preview taste test of the new slush at Sonic’s Oklahoma City headquarters, the drink’s syrup has a “sweet and tangy” punch to it.
If Sonic thinks for one minute that I’m going to put that pickle slush anywhere near my mouth, well then they got another thing coming. See, I’m looking right in their beady little eyes and saying “EH-EH SONIC” that just ain’t gonna happen. And, that’s the bottom line, ’cause Big Natural said so.
Those of you who read that in Stone Cold Steve Austin’s voice deserve a round of applause.
Regardless, this sounds disgusting. I know there are redneck parts of the world where pickle juice is used in cocktails. Pickle juice martinis are all the rage, I hear. But, that just sounds gross. I’m a YUGE fan of pickles, too! This isn’t coming out of a hatred for the pickle. I support pickles. Big time waver of the pickle flag here. But, do we really need it in slush form? It’s a hard pass from me, Sonic. You tried. Congration you done it.
AND YES – I understand that this is a marketing gimmick done for promotion, and I love Sonic, so I am happy to give them the free publicity. They have the best breakfast burritos around. This pickle juice slush does nothing to change my love for America’s Drive-in. Do they still call themselves that?
AND YES – I will probably end up drinking one of these things for #content. So, there’s that.
