BREAKING: Penny Hardaway to Memphis – MUST Consider Hiring Lil’ Penny

A bit of a tumultuous time for Memphis Tigers basketball. They had a rough go of it this year and missed the NCAA Tournament altogether. Well, it looks like the arrow’s pointing up, because they announced today that they’re bringing in Penny Hardaway to coach the Tigers.

Courtesy of ESPN:

Hardaway, who starred at the school in the early 1990s, will replace Tubby Smith, who was fired after just two seasons earlier this month.

Hardaway, 46, was drafted with the third overall pick in 1993 and played in the NBA from 1993 to 2008 — with Orlando, Phoenix, New York and Miami. He was a four-time NBA All-Star.

Former Memphis star Penny Hardaway has agreed to a deal to become the next Tigers men’s basketball coach, and a news conference is expected on Tuesday, sources told ESPN.

Yeah, that’s all well and good. But, if you ask me – business item NUMERO UNO should be making the phone call to Lil’ Penny. I mean, this is the most successful basketball marketing campaign of all time, right?

No one remembers that ‘Just Do It’ bullshit. No one remembers Uncle Drew. You Google “greatest basketball marketing campaigns of all time” and Lil Penny pops up right at the top of the list.

So, why is that important? Well, it’s easy. In this day and age, you have to go above and beyond your competition in recruiting. Everyone’s getting paid. Everyone’s going to get a chance to start. But, not everyone’s going to get a chance to be coached by Lil Penny.

Don’t you think that would give Memphis a YUGE advantage on the crootin’ trail? “Join the Tigers. We’ve got Lil Penny.”

I’m telling you – take it from a man who knows how to speak to this generation of basketball players. This is the way to go. You want the Tigers competin’ for National Championships? You call Lil Penny.
