The 5 Most Underrated Wrestlemania Events

Wrestlemania season is upon us, and we’re starting to ramp up our coverage of the event. First up, my list of the five most underrated shows in the event’s history. LET’S GOOOOOO!

Wrestlemania IX

I’m going to catch a lot of shit for this one. The infamous Caesars Palace edition of Wrestlemania has been called the worst in the show’s existence by many a wrestling “journalist.” But, that show was all the pageantry that a Wrestlemania should be. Yes, that main event was a complete and utter joke. But, let’s not damn the entire card for it.

Shawn Michaels and Tatanka put on a hell of a show. And the two tag matches, Money Inc. vs. The Mega Maniacs and The Steiner Brothers vs. The Headshrinkers, were fun. And, how many times have we seen that clip of Bobby “The Brain” Heenan riding the camel down the aisle backwards? Go ahead – @ me.

Wrestlemania 31

It felt like an episode of NXT. Outside of a Skylar Grey performance, Rock and Ronda Rousey promo, and the elaborate entrances, the show was wrestling centered. The main event between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns (and Seth Rollins) was one of the all time classics. Triple vs. Sting was a fun nostalgia-fest. The Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match was exhilarating, and Rollins and Randy Orton stole the show.

With the exception of a plodding Undertaker-Bray Wyatt match, Wrestlemania 31 delivered on the action. Plus, we got to see Rusev driving a tank. C’mon now.

Wrestlemania XIV

This show kicked the Attitude Era into overdrive. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Shawn Michaels with Mike Tyson as the special guest enforcer remains one of the most iconic matches and moments in WWE history. But, the show also marked the first match between Undertaker and Kane. Triple H vs. Owen Hart for the European Championship is a hidden Wrestlemania gem, along with the Dumpster Match between the New Age Outlaws and Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie. For some reason, Wrestlemania XIV shows up on more “worst” lists than “best” ones.

Wrestlemania XXVI

It featured one of if not the greatest main event in the show’s history: Career vs. Streak…Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker. But, outside of a disappointing match between Vince McMahon and Bret Hart and an ordinary 10-woman tag, that card was absolutely stacked.

Edge-Chris Jericho and John Cena-Batista were the two title matches. Both delivered. Triple H and Sheamus put on a solid match, and C.M. Punk and Rey Mysterio stole the show. No idea why this card isn’t talked about among the best.

Wrestlemania 24

Wrestlemania 24 had everything you’d expect of a Wrestlemania and then some – two great title matches, the spectacle and pageantry, pyro, a killer set, celebrity involvement, high drama..everything. But, for some reason, it doesn’t get mentioned with the all-time greats.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I actually remember enjoying the Floyd Mayweather-Big Show match. I had such low expectations going into it that it pleasantly surprised. And, who can forget him breaking Big Show’s nose the hard way heading into the show?

The John Cena-Randy Orton-Triple H Triple Threat was fine enough. But, the two classics from this show were a 24-minute World Heavyweight Championship epic between The Undertaker and Edge and the famous “I’m sorry – I love you” Ric Flair-Shawn Michaels bout that sent Flair into retirement. Throw in fun hidden gems like Finlay-JBL and an exciting Money In The Bank Ladder Match, and you’ve got the complete Wrestlemania.

What do you think, WWE fans? What is the most underrated Wrestlemania of all time?
