Kevin Smith has gone mainstream with Cop Out. Smith has directed films that have become indie hits: Clerks, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Smith brings back the buddy-cop comedy and also makes Cop Out a throw back to the 80s and 90s. And Smith has done a pretty nice job making a good, funny movie and giving credit to movies like 48 Hours and Lethal Weapon.

Jimmy (Bruce Willis) and Paul (Tracy Morgan) have been partners for almost ten years. Jimmy and Paul get suspended without pay after blowing a huge investigation. This puts Jimmy in a tough spot because his daughter wants a huge wedding and he wants to give it to her. However, it’s going to cost almost $50,000 and Jimmy does not have that kind of money lying around the house. So he is forced to sell his most precious baseball card so his daughter will have the wedding she has always dreamed of.

Paul has his own issues and they mostly all involve him speculating that his wife has been cheating on him. So he sets up a cam in a stuffed teddy bear to catch her in the act. Meanwhile, there is a group of gangsters who have a drug operation and the leader of it loves sports. He loves it so much that he has a room dedicated to sports with priceless memorabilia. And when Jimmy’s baseball card is stolen, guess who ends up getting it? You get the picture. All of Jimmy and Paul’s problems begin to run together and the outcome could end in violence, tragedy, or Jimmy never getting his baseball card back.

This whole movie was quite surprising to me. It was funnier than I thought it would be. The chemistry between Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan was better than I thought it would be. And the movie itself was a lot better than I had thought. Willis and Morgan were funny and are put in some hilarious situations.

And it gets real good when Seann William Scott gets involved. Scott plays the most irritating and immature character in the whole movie. Morgan’s Paul comes in at a close second, but when Sean William Scott starts picking on Paul and mocking him it is funny. You just cannot help but laugh when Sean William Scott is on-screen.

The movie is rated R and for good reason. There is language and quite a bit of it. Of course, it is an action movie as well so there is shooting, blood, and killing involved. But if Kevin Smith had played it safe and made it a PG-13 movie, it would not have been as enjoyable. Some movies are meant to be rated R and this is one of them.

Cop Out is an entertaining movie that brings the formula for these type of movies to the plate and Smith hits it out of the park. He mixes humor and action with more than a few ridiculous and outrageous scenarios. On top of all that, you have the perfect combination of the dry sense of humor and quick wit of Willis and Morgan. All of this equals a good time at the movies.
