Titans: Recent Picks at 25 in the NFL Draft

Be it because of a trade or just flat out being terrible, the Tennessee Titans have had a high draft pick each of the last several seasons. But, this year, things are a bit different. The Titans will select at 25th overall (barring a trade, mind you). Obviously, that’s pretty late in the first round.

It’s something we’re not really accustomed to as Titans fans, bloggers, whatever. There’s about a million different ways the team could go, but before we get into all that, I figured I’d prep you guys by looking back at the last five selections at #25 in the NFL Draft. Just wanted to revisit the type of player that could be available there.

2017: S Jabrill Peppers (Cleveland)

He was a part of the Browns first round haul that saw them land Myles Garrett and David Njoku as well. But, whether it was a lack of development or just playing for the Browns, for some reason, it just didn’t work this year.

Obviously, Peppers has a wealth of talent. He was one of the most dynamic players in the country in 2016, and earned a Heisman finalist’s spot for his efforts. Still way too early to call him a bust.

2016: CB Artie Burns (Pittsburgh)

Like Peppers, it’s kind of hard to write the book on Burns after just two seasons. But, what we have seen has been inconsistent. He’s a talented guy who appears to be on track to becoming a serviceable starter in the NFL. Injuries slowed his 2017 campaign down, so we’ll get a better look in 2018. At this point, Burns looks like he’s going to be a solid player.

2015: OLB Shaq Thompson (Carolina)

Thompson has quietly become one of the most disruptive pass rush forces in the NFL. He’s a tackling machine, and is just outright nasty. I see this pick and think, “man, if the Titans end up with a guy like him at #25, they’re going to be just fine.” If we’re redoing the 2015 draft, I can’t imagine the guy makes it to #25.

2014: CB Jason Verrett (San Diego)

The former TCU Horned Frog once looked like he was set to become one of the elite corners in the NFL. But, he hasn’t quite completed that trajectory. Namely because he hasn’t played a full season in his career yet. The guy stays hurt, and even once he’s healthy, it’s going to be hard to re-earn his keep in that crowded Chargers secondary that looks to be one of the best in the league next season.

2013: CB Xavier Rhodes (Minnesota)

Rhodes is in the conversation to be the best cornerback in the NFL. He was the key shutdown guy for that menacing Vikings defense, and should be playing at an elite level for years to come. The fact that he was selected at #25 means he was an outright steal.

All of this is to show that the Titans will still have some tremendously talented options at #25 this year. What really matters is whether or not the guy making the call can make the right decision, and so far, Jon Robinson has been money. In J-Rob We Trust.
