Rob Gronkowski Contemplating Retirement?

Big news coming out of all the Super Bowl postgame press conferences. Obviously, it didn’t end the way the New England Patriots wanted, and there are a lot of ancillary stories coming out of the game. But, one that caught my eye was Rob Gronkowski almost subconsciously letting it slip that he was “considering his future” in the NFL:

Couple things, first and foremost – that’s a damn tough spot to put a guy in. He had just lost the biggest game of the year, he’s already down, and the reporter’s like, “you retiring, dude?” It was obvious Gronk wasn’t aware that these reports were circulating, and wasn’t really ready to answer. I admire the fact that he didn’t just outright deny the report. There’s a certain authenticity about the guy that I respect and appreciate.

Second, whoever that journalist is did some damn digging! It sounds like Gronk was taken completely by surprise and immediately went into panic mode. Like, “do I lie? Am I honest? What do I say?” So, kudos to that guy for getting such a scoop. Maybe pick a better time to ask than when homie just lost the Super Bowl, but ultimately, I get it. In most cases, we’re dealing with a 24-hour news cycle. If you don’t put it out there, then someone’s eventually going to beat you to it.

But, as for Gronk, listen – I applaud that guys are starting to realize the ill effects of playing football. Whether he retires or not, the fact that he’s even thought about should speak volumes. I mean, this is a guy who could go down in NFL history as the greatest tight end of all time. Maybe he needs another season or two to cement that, but he might give that up for the sake of his health and happiness. How can anyone not respect that?

This phenomenon is one of several I think will ultimately result in the decline in popularity of American football as a whole. So, from my perspective, I say good for Gronk. It’s his decision to make, because he’s the one who has to live with it. Some things are more important.

And, yes – not outright denying these claims reasonably indicates that he’s at least thought about retirement.

Whatever Gronk decides, I hope it’s only a matter of time before we see the guy in a WWE ring.
