Mike Fisher Returns

Early this morning, the Nashville Predators announced they were holding a press conference with David Poile, Peter Laviolette, and others. Many began speculating what this could be about. Was it a trade? An outdoor game? Contract extensions? Rumors were swirling and OH MY GOD! THAT’S MIKE FISHER’S MUSIC!

Yes, news finally began leaking out that former Predators’ Captain and fan favorite, Mike Fisher was coming out of retirement to join the Preds for the stretch run of the season! So what does this mean for the Predators going forward and how does it affect the lineup?

It’s hard to view this as anything other than a positive for the Predators. The center depth was already strong and it just got stronger with the addition of Fisher. Going forward, you have to think it will be Ryan Johansen, Kyle Turris, Nick Bonino, and Mike Fisher. That’s a deep group, plus you can throw in Calle Jarnkrok or Colton Sissons in a pinch in case of injury. As the team learned last year during the playoffs, you can never have enough center depth.

My projected lines once everyone is healthy and ready to go look like this:

Forsberg/Johansen/Arvidsson
Fiala/Turris/Smith
Hartnell/Bonino/Jarnkrok
Watson/Fisher/Sissons or Salomaki

Unfortunately, I think this means the end of Aberg in Nashville for this season. He’s got some talent, but just hasn’t been able to put it together this year. Maybe some time in Milwaukee will do him some good.

Look, no one is expecting Fisher to come in and be a point-per-game producer. He’s never been that. His role going forward will be 4th line center that can provide some offense every once and while, play defense, and kill penalties. These are the types of players that can help propel a team to a deep playoff run. His leadership in the locker room cannot be understated as well. He’s the type of player that is loved by his teammates and can command a locker room when needed. Josi will still be Captain, but don’t be surprised if Fisher has an “A” soon.

This is an exciting time for the Predators. They’re gearing up for the stretch run, Forsberg is close to returning, and Fisher just announced he’s coming out of retirement for one last run at the Stanley Cup. A ton to look forward to as a Preds fan. Buckle up, because we’re about to be in for one HELL of a run. Go Preds!
