Brian Daboll to the Buffalo Bills, Tide Looking for a New Offensive Coordinator Again

Fresh off of winning a National Championship as offensive coordinator of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Brian Daboll has been hired by the Buffalo Bills. He’ll hold the same position up in western New York, as the Bills look to upgrade an offense that had no kick whatsoever during the playoffs, or during the entire season for that matter.

The Buffalo Bills hired Brian Daboll to be their offensive coordinator, the team announced Sunday.

Daboll spent last season at Alabama, where he led the Crimson Tide’s offense to a national championship.

“Brian did a tremendous job for us this past season at Alabama, and I know he will do a great job for the Buffalo Bills. He is an outstanding coach and coordinator who put us in position to be successful each week. We appreciate all that he did in terms of his time and his dedication in contributing to the success we had this season,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a statement.

Daboll just seems like a guy built for the NFL. But, if the success he had with Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa is any indication, Tyrod Taylor could stand to benefit immensely from his addition. That is, of course, if they choose to stick with Taylor. It’s entirely possible the Bills draft a quarterback instead.

It’s just unbelievable what working for Saban does for a coach, though. The NFL has poached two of his last three offensive coordinators (Daboll, and Steve Sarkisian), the third being Lane Kiffin, who took a head coaching job at Florida Atlantic this past season. Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt was hired at Tennessee. Kirby Smart, who Pruitt replaced, took the Georgia Bulldogs to the National Championship as head coach. It’s just stunning what being apart of the Saban coaching tree can do for a guy.

As for who is going to replace Daboll, well…it’s early. The big name right now is wide receivers coach Mike Locksley, who has experience as an offensive coordinator and head coach in the past. But, Saban hasn’t necessarily shown a tendency to promote from within. So, who knows? Matt Canada was a hot name to replace Kiffin, but it didn’t happen. He was recently fired from Ed Orgeron’s staff at LSU, so I’m unsure of whether or not he’ll be as hot a commodity this go around.

Here’s a complete wild card: how about Hugh Freeze? Saban has been known to take on a reclamation project (see Kiffin and Sark), so maybe this is Freeze’s ticket back into coaching? Who knows? One thing is for sure, though. Freeze showed a knack for beating Saban while he was at Ole Miss, so maybe he’s worth considering. But, I doubt it.

The odds of that happening have to be astronomical, but probably better than the odds of the Tide finding another offensive coordinator who looks so much like a younger version of Santa Claus.
