Can We Please Stop Saying ‘MAIRiota?’
At this point, Marcus Mariota has been in the NFL for three seasons. But, he’s been on the radar of football fans and professionals for longer than that. He won a Heisman Trophy. The Oregon Ducks, that he quarterbacked, played for a National Championship. It’s been half a decade, if not longer, that Mariota has been in the national spotlight. And, for some reason, people are still pronouncing his name wrong. It is indeed not “MAIR-ee-oh-tah.” It is:
It is not that hard, people. I can’t make it any plainer. It’s one thing for the casual fan to mess this up. Non-football fans, people who don’t cover the sport for a living, people from other parts of the country where Mariota isn’t talked about – that’s understandable. That’s one thing, but hearing it from people who listen to Nashville sports talk every day and from people who actually cover the sport…that is totally different.
Excuse me, that is totally unacceptable. There’s no excuse for that. How hard is it to remember? There are only two ways that people commonly mess up. You never hear anything totally off the wall – it’s either MAIRiota or MAHRiota. And, it’s usually wrong.
People that listen to sports talk every day in Nashville – like, they listen to nine hours of local coverage at the least….from people who pronounce this name correctly…and they STILL call in and say “MAIRiota.” How the fuck does that even happen? How are these people not subconsciously conditioned to pronounce the name correctly just from hearing it so often? I don’t understand.
Then, there’s the media – the team calling the Titans-Chiefs game slipped up and said “MAIRiota” on a couple of occasions. During the highlights of the night game, Al Michaels said, “MAIRiota.” Al Michaels!? AL MICHAELS OF ALL PEOPLE! Can’t pronounce the man’s name right.
How does this happen, folks?!?! WHY does this still happen? It’s been YEARS since we were first introduced to Mariota.
I still continue to be outright amazed at how this incorrect phenomenon has taken off. YUGE opportunity for all of us to #BeBetter. Do your part to make sure ‘Mariota’ is pronounced correctly. It’s just the respectful thing to do.
Side note – I heard Mariota on 104.5 The Zone’s Midday 180 that the traditional Hawaiian pronunciation is actually “mah-ree-oh-TAH,” but good luck getting anyone to remember that.
