Nick Saban Ties Bear Bryant, Wins His Sixth National Championship

Well, folks. That was one we’ll certainly never forget. The Alabama Crimson Tide just won another National Championship under head coach Nick Saban, defeating the Georgia Bulldogs 26-23 in Atlanta. After much debate about whether or not the Tide even belonged in the College Football Playoff, I think that talk has pretty well been settled.

The legend of Nick Saban may never stop growing. He now has five National Championships in the last nine years. But, this one just may mark his finest coaching job yet. Keep in mind, the injuries he’s had to manage and the turnover of his coaching staff. But, all of that pales in comparison to the decision he made to bench quarterback Jalen Hurts in favor of true freshman Tua Tagovailoa at the half.

Hurts was 3/8 for just 21 yards, but it was the stuff that the stats didn’t show that was so alarming from a kid who had previously only lost two games as Alabama’s starter. He seemed rattled and a impulsive, jolting from the pocket at the slightest hint of pressure, holding the ball far too long, and missing several passes. The offense was flat out dormant.

Tagovailoa came into the game and finished 14/24 for 166 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He showed resolve and poise, and his team (defense included) responded. He hit DeVonta Smith for the 41-yard game-winning touchdown in overtime, just one play after taking a horrendous sack that put the Tide at 2nd & 26. It was truly phenomenal.

The move, on Saban’s part, showed a firm understanding of what his team needed and just how to spark them. Perhaps Saban’s biggest strength is his ability to adapt…to see and feel a game and adjust. It showed a lot of faith in his freshman quarterback, and it showed a lot of faith in offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Saban put it all on the line when it mattered most and his team responded.

I swear, it’s like magic. The way he runs this program and the way he consistently gets people to perform their best and deliver. It’s unbelievable. Regardless, these Georgia Bulldogs are good. I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing Saban vs. Smart for years to come. But, boy, would The Bear be happy tonight or what?
