Big Natural’s College Football Playoff Projections – Week 11

Last year, I painted a pretty clear picture of why college football needs an eight-team playoff.  I stand by that argument – eight is the way…no more, no less. So, I’ve started a new weekly column looking at what the College Football Playoff would look like under my format. I think it’s a reasonable way to determine a National Champion without leaving deserving candidates out, but making sure everyone has an equal chance to get in. With that said, let’s dive right in to my weekly College Football Playoff projections…

BIG NATURAL’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF PROJECTIONS

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC Champion) – The Tide willed themselves to a gutsy win over an underrated Mississippi State team. With the Georgia Bulldogs falling to Auburn, they take over as the leader in the SEC clubhouse. At 10-0, they are the rightful number one at this point.

2. Miami Hurricanes (ACC Champion) – Do you believe the U is back yet? My goodness, I bet Notre Dame is still sore from that fanny tappin’ on Saturday night. The Hurricanes are in the driver seat for the ACC Championship. If they win out, they’re guaranteed an actual playoff spot, but they may be good enough to get one of my eight regardless.

3. Oklahoma Sooners (Big 12 Champion) – Baker Mayfield is now the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, and the Sooners are rolling. They absolutely torched a TCU defense that was supposed to be the best in the Big 12 and one of the best in the entire country.

4. Wisconsin Badgers (Big Ten Champion) – Again, I won’t fault the Badgers for going undefeated and everyone else in the Big Ten having at least two losses. It’s a down year for the conference, just a year after I said it was the best conference in college football. The burning question right now is whether an undefeated Wisconsin gets into the playoffs. That’s absurd to me. There should be room for an undefeated Big Ten Champion regardless.

5. USC Trojans (Pac-12 Champion) – Who wants the Pac-12?! Really!? Who wants it? Right now, the Trojans look like the best team in the conference per the eye test, but I’d say the chances of this conference getting anyone into the actual playoff are pretty slim. I still think it comes down to the Pac-12 Championship game.

6. Clemson Tigers (Wild Card #1) – It would help if the Tigers didn’t have the ugliest loss of all the major playoff contenders, but they control their own destiny en route to the playoffs. So, how mad can you really be? I expect Dabo Sweeney’s squad will be there when all the dominos fall.

7. Auburn Tigers (Wild Card #2) – Two losses, I know….but who around them looks better right now? You gonna put Notre Dame or Georgia in this slot after what we saw this weekend? You think Ohio State or Penn State is a better team? Nah, my second wild card goes to the Tigers.

8. UCF Golden Knights (Group of Five Representative) – It’s a damn shame that UCF has no shot whatsoever at earning a National Championship. What else can they do besides win all their games? This is a good football that deserves a chance. Thankfully, in my 8-team model, there’s room.

So, that gives us…
(1) Alabama vs. (8) UCF
(2) Miami vs. (7) Auburn
(3) Oklahoma vs. (6) Clemson
(4) Wisconsin vs. (5) USC

Catch y’all next week.
