The Nature Boy Ric Flair is living a life only most can dream about. Honestly, he seems amazed that he’s still alive, and after what I just watched—he’s not the only one. After seeing ESPN’s astonishing new 30 for 30, Flair is every bit of the man, the myth and the legend. Still, for such a prolific guy, this documentary uncovers some things that may surprise even the biggest of wrestling fans. Things that have been hidden behind the flamboyance and sparkling robes are now ready to do their own stylin’ and profilin’.
Here’s a list of things that I didn’t know, questions I need answered, and one person I don’t believe.
Parents
- He’s adopted! He found out when he was 10 years old. Also, not only did they celebrate his birthday, but the anniversary of his adoption as well.
- Speaking of his parents, they couldn’t wait to get rid of him. There never seems to be any interest from either his mom or dad on who he was and what he was doing with his life.
Wrestling
- Seeing his unbelievable retirement match between Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 24 followed by his TNA matches was a tragedy. He was getting spanked bare ass in a cage. WTF.
- His feud with Dusty Rhodes made me miss the days when you believed wrestlers truly hated each other. They were way better actors back then I guess. Their investment was incredible.
- Hulk Hogan gave credit where credit is due. Good for him. However, I don’t believe for one second Hulk gives Flair props on changing the business like he says. He craves the spotlight more than Ric and that’s saying something.
Random
- Who knew Jerry Lee Lewis would give birth to the Woooooooo?
- Is it just me or did Flair look like a heavier Bob Backlund in his first match?
- Flair is shown busted open in his own home gym. I just want to ask director Rory Karpf how the hell did that happen?! Were we just supposed to ignore that?!
- When the ICON Sting tells you he doesn’t know any other person who had their pants down more than Flair—you can probably take his word for it. From his college days to being on a plane with nothing under his robe, Flair is one proud owner of a thick stick. I’m just guessing with this one.
