NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

Well, shit – we’re a bunch of football writers, so I guess we have to get in on the ‘NFL Power Rankings’ action. So, here we are. Your boy “Big Natural” is a major advocate of the Bill Parcells school of thinking in that ‘you are what your record says you are.’

With that in mind, my power rankings are going to be based on the body of work. I don’t care what you were supposed to do before the season started. Nor do I care what you could do in a potential matchup. I’m placing an emphasis on what teams have actually done.

NFL POWER RANKINGS: WEEK 8

1. Philadelphia Eagles – Who had the Eagles at 7-1?!?! Not I. That defense is nasty, they’re running the ball effectively, and Carson Wentz is in the NFL MVP discussion, if not leading it. Things couldn’t be going much better in Philly. This big trade that saw Jay Ajayi become an Eagle says this team is thinking Super Bowl.

2. New England Patriots – Don’t underrate this week’s win. That Chargers team is tough and was trying to stay afloat in the AFC. I said that the Pats seem to be finding their stride and that looks to be true. This is a totally different team than the one that was dominated in Week 1 by the Chiefs.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers – Okay, I’m finally ready to buy in on the Steelers. Like the Pats, these guys are finding their stride…well….except for Martavis Bryant..but yeah. That defense is pretty good, too.

4. Kansas City Chiefs – Have to wonder about consistency, but the Chiefs got that W against the Broncos last night to hang around the AFC’s elite.

5. New Orleans Saints – Alright, boys and girls. Time to hop aboard the Saints hype train. Now we know what this team would look like if the braintrust in New Orleans discovered what ‘defense’ is.

6. Seattle Seahawks – A big, gutsy win over the electric Texans has the Seahawks rising on my list. Things seem to be coming together up in Seattle.

7. Minnesota Vikings – I don’t mean to be a hater….I don’t want to be a hater….but the Vikes are only here because they’re 6-2. But, does anyone truly believe this team is going to be here come season’s end?

8. Buffalo Bills – Why is no one talking about how good the Bills are? I don’t get it – I’m saying the same things every weekend. Good defense. Capable offense. They keep winning games.

9. Los Angeles Rams – Still high on the Rams and that high octane offense. If this defense could just stop the run, they’d be a lot higher on the list.

10. Carolina Panthers – Inconsistency is keeping Carolina from landing among the elite, but they have that potential to beat anybody in the league.

11. Dallas Cowboys – Don’t look now, folks. But, here come the Cowboys. Who knows what’s going to happen with Zeke Elliot? Regardless, Dallas is starting to win games.

12. Atlanta Falcons – The Falcons absolutely had to get that game against the Jets to stop the bleeding, and they did just that. They still have to keep correcting course.

13. Miami Dolphins – Let’s give some credit to Adam Gase. He’s doing a lot with a little. The Fins need to shake a few dreadful performances, but they should be right in the mix of this jumbled AFC wild card race.

14. Jacksonville Jaguars – The Jags and Titans are tied atop the AFC South, but even though the Titans beat them head-to-head, the Jags have looked better on the season. Plus, per the eye test, the Texans look like the best team in this division. It’s anybody’s race. But, so long as the Jags are playing elite defense, they’re legit contenders.

15.Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens have been as high as the top five and as low as the 20s this season. That should be indicative of where this team is at right now. Still, a dominant win over a decent Miami team earns them a spot in the top 15.

16. Tennessee Titans
17. Denver Broncos
18. Houston Texans
19. Washington Redskins
20. Detroit Lions
21. Green Bay Packers
22. Arizona Cardinals
23. Chicago Bears
24. Los Angeles Chargers
25. Cincinnati Bengals
26. Oakland Raiders
27. New York Jets
28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
29. Indianapolis Colts
30. New York Giants
31. San Francisco 49ers
32. Cleveland Browns
