Creed 2 Director Is Rocky’s Biggest Fan

Sylvester Stallone loves Rocky Balboa. He has the biggest man crush on him and who could blame him? He will forever be a part of movie history. Try listening to Eye of the Tiger without thinking of Rocky. You can’t! That character made Stallone a star as well as an two-time Oscar nominee. Personally, I think he should’ve won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Creed. I bet if he died, he would’ve won! The character not the guy.

Anyways, Stallone has announced he’s getting behind the camera to direct Creed 2. Not the best choice, but I guess it was really just a matter of time. Over at CinemaBlend, Eric Eisenberg lays out how Sly is used to this sorta thing:

“Sylvester Stallone is not only no stranger to directing, but the truth is that Rocky titles make up the bulk of his resume in that arena. In fact, the only series movies that he didn’t make are the original Rocky and Rocky V, which were both made by John G. Avildsen. Back in 2006 he made what at the time seemed like a final hurrah move directing Rocky Balboa, but clearly he’s not finished telling stories set within the world.”

Ryan Coogler directed Creed and he was the perfect choice. He’s a talented, sharp filmmaker with a fresh voice and new perspective. In his directorial debut, Fruitvale Station, him and Michael B. Jordan proved they’re the real deal. But now he’s on to The Black Panther and Stallone is back in his comfy place of directing his boxing franchise.

My worry is Stallone will repeat what he’s done so many times that whatever creative juices are flowing from Creed, he’s going to throw it all out, not leaving a drop. We’ve seen what he can do, and then we saw what someone else can do. That someone else should be stepping in the ring now. There’s still no confirmation on if Stallone will be returning as Rocky in Creed 2, but come on. After reading this entire thing—does it really sound like he’s ready to hang up the gloves? He hasn’t heard the 10 count in decades.
