Nashville Power Rankings: Week 9

Nashville – we’re back for Week 9 of the SoBros Network’s Nashville Power Rankings. As journalists, we have the story of a city to tell, and we’re hammering it out one week at a time.

It’s been a bit of a quiet week in Nashville – all anyone seems to be talking about is either the blistering heat or the total eclipse. But, alas, the show must go on.

If you have a submission for this column, feel free to DM us on Facebook or Twitter, or shoot us an e-mail at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com because we’re still too cheap to pay for e-mail hosting.

The Week in Review

Story of the Week: The heat. My god was it hot this week or what? I mean, we’re really starting to approach that home stretch of Summer. Do y’all even realize that there’s only about five or six weeks left before Labor Day? Like, Titans training camp starts next week! But, that said, it means we’re heading into the hottest time of the year. So, be sure you’re taking the proper steps to beat the heat. Don’t leave your kids or pets locked in a fucking car, and do all you can to make sure everyone’s staying hydrated.

Honorary Nashvillian of the Week: Taco John’s. Yeahhhh, buddy. It’s about time Taco Bell had some competition for shitty Mexican fast food that isn’t really Mexican food. I hear good things, and it looks like I’m going to be making a few more trips to La Vergne than I’d care to.

SoBros Nashville Story of the Week: The team went out to Bridgestone Arena on Monday night to catch WWE’s Monday Night Raw. Check out our full report here.

Step Your Game Up

Michael Oher – One minute, you’re king of the world. Tim McGraw and Sandra Bullock are your parents…next thing you know, you’re in concussion protocol for nearly an entire year and beating up your Uber driver…according to The Tennessean:

Oher was charged with misdemeanor assault in the early morning of April 14. Nashville police said Oher pushed and kicked his Uber driver over an apparent dispute with the fare.

Oher, who has been in the NFL’s concussion protocol since September, was released from the Carolina Panthers on Thursday with a failed physical designation.

#BeBetter.

Wal-Mart – According to WSMV:

Walmart is remixing a southern classic with the release of its fruit punch flavored pickles

Nope, fuck that. I’m out. On to the next story…

On to the rankings

5. Nathan “Nearest” GreenCredit to WKRN:

A foundation will commemorate a former Tennessee slave who contributed to the history of Jack Daniel whiskey with a new museum, memorial park, book and college scholarships for his descendants.

A news release Wednesday says best-selling author Fawn Weaver has launched the Nearest Green Foundation, named for Nathan “Nearest” Green.

Pretty cool little story coming out of Lynchburg this week.

4. Bar Louie – Bar Louie is excellent, and they just announced they’re opening a third location in Bellevue. By the way, good for Bellevue! They’re getting a Chili’s, too! Anyway, Bar Louie is your local establishment of the week – great burgers. Go hit ’em up.

3. Burger Week – The Nashville Scene organized #SceneBurgerWeek, where you can visit a local establishment, have one of their signature burgers for just $5!! Thankfully, it’s still going on so you have time to get out there and participate. So far, I’ve hit up The District and Puckett’s, but plan to at least visit one more restaurant today.

2. Employment – Shout out to all those putting in the effort to reduce the unemployment rate and make sure those who need the system are receiving those benefits.

The Department of Labor released record numbers on Thursday showing the lowest unemployment rate Tennessee has ever seen at 3.6 percent.

Since last year, the News 4 I-Team has been reporting about a system upgrade that caused delays in benefits for thousands of unemployed Tennesseans.

For the first time in more than a year the majority of people waiting for benefits are finally getting paid within 21 days.

In January, the I-Team reported 3,000 out of 15,000 claims were taking longer than three weeks.

Right on.

1. Jalan Sowell – Great story out of Mount Juliet this week. Check out the full video here.

A Mt. Juliet teen has achieved a dream, thanks to ESPN and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Jalan Sowell’s wish was to producer and be the subject of an ESPN feature. The 16-year-old’s “My Wish” segment premiered on Sports Center Wednesday night.

Sowell suffers from a chronic pulmonary embolism and is not able to play football anymore, but he’s still able to be involved as a student coach for Mt. Juliet High School.

’til next week, you stay classy, Nashville!
