BEAUTY & THE BEAST (2017)

3.5 out of 5 stars

This tale as old as time still magically dazzles w/ an incredible cast, lead by the undeniable chemistry of Watson & Stevens.Condon spins this beloved classic into a visually radiant, enchanting dance, one you don’t mind experiencing again while singing along.

I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD

3.5 out of 5 stars

An oddball film w/ plenty of goofiness, but don’t you dare shrug off its natural fury over the state of humanity. Lynskey is a powerhouse, fed up & unleashing her wrath in the most convulsive, funny & entertaining way she knows how.

I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO

4 out of 5 stars

History is on repeat in this powerfully piercing documentary, supplied by Baldwin’s crucial observations of race & oppression. His words are poetic, furious, & elegant, screaming for unity while asking pivotal questions we don’t want to answer.

LOGAN

5 out of 5 stars

Comic book movie my ass. This unstoppable,emotionally-charged,gritty bloodbath is something much more. Through the pain, scars, &sacrifice, Mangold provides an affectionately human element to a mutant story. Jackman & Stewart are phenomenal, making their iconic characters’ last breath forever indelible.

THE SHACK

2 out of 5 stars

A spiritual movie w/ moments of introspection, but is too insipid to allow any breakthroughs or miracles on screen. It’s a transcendent preachify where themes of loss & forgiveness are oversimplified & easy to accept. Get real.

A UNITED KINGDOM

3.5 out of 5 stars

There’s some humdrum that follows this taboo love story, but is kept alive by the dynamic  pairing of Oyelowo & Pike. History tends to repeat itself, which is why the topic of culture-clashing & quest for tolerance & acceptance is very pertinent, worthy of a viewing.

BURNING SANDS

3 out of 5 stars

Another college hazing film where masculinity is misunderstood, which is unsurprising if you saw last years’ ; but it’s well-executed w/ an excellent cast, specifically Jackson who worships the brotherhood until his hopes are poisoned by senseless degrading.

RAW

3 out of 5 stars

This daring, disturbing French horror film has real bite thanks to a deliciously demented performance by Marillier. Still, the inner lining themes of exploring female transformation & experimenting w/ who you are & want to be are crippled due to all of the meaty madness.

DEIDRA & LANEY ROB A TRAIN

1 out of 5 stars

This teenage crime caper is a train wreck of a movie. Any sort of potential is wasted due to sloppy storytelling, coming across as amateurish & deeply cliched.

THE DEVIL’S CANDY

3.5 out of 5 stars

A delectably demented horror film that isn’t afraid to dance w/ the devil. It brings style & ear-deafening heavy metal music to a wild tale of possession.

THE LURE

3 out of 5 stars

It defies any genre you could ever dream of. A foreign horror comedy mermaid musical is beyond ambitious, but it makes one intriguing, spirited splash. These ladies can swim, seduce, & their bite leaves a vicious mark.

WILSON

2.5 out of 5 stars

A dramedy of a guy that can’t catch a break. Harrelson is terrific as the title character, the delivery of his intrusiveness, negativity, & brutal honesty is diverting. Sadly, finding a connection is not only Wilson’s flaw, but the movie’s as well.

UNCERTAIN

3.5 out of 5 stars

A somber, fascinating portrait of a forgotten town where some wish to escape while others seek refuge. This film is intimate w/o being insulting, exploring different walks of life as they survive a starved, vanishing world.

LIFE

2.5 out of 5 stars

It’s not terrible, but the horror factor & ending doesn’t shock. We’ve seen it done bigger & better by directors Carpenter & Scott. There are glimpses of something original, but this sci-fi creature feature won’t be remembered.

POWER RANGERS (2017)

1.5 out of 5 stars

When it’s , the movie gets punchy for about 10 minutes. The rest is dumb & soulless, having great difficulty deciding what it wants to be. It fails at having fun & succeeds at killing my childhood.
