The Patriots Have Won More Championship Banners Than They Know What to Do With

Oh, New England. After over a decade of dominance now, the Patriots have successfully put together one of if not the greatest dynasty in NFL history. Their fifth Super Bowl title was earned in dramatic fashion, storming back from 25 down to the Atlanta Falcons to tie the game and win it in overtime. It’s probably the greatest Super Bowl of all time, and guess what – they make banners for Super Bowl champs….

So, this..this is the complete definition of the ‘first world problems’ meme.

The Patriots don’t have many problems and even the ones they have are the type of things most NFL teams would sell their souls to have.

First question – do NFL teams indeed have souls to sell?

For instance, the Patriots have run into a real humdinger: they don’t have any more room for championship banners at Gillette Stadium.

As pointed out by Mike Reiss of ESPN, when the Patriots opened up Gillette Stadium in 2002, they created a big space over the scoreboard to hang giant championship banners.

There’s only space for four banners because when the Patriots built the stadium they probably weren’t thinking about filling up the space.

Yeah – totally fair. I think this is one of those things every NFL team is probably doing, but you can’t envision this sort of sustained run happening. It’s like, “hey, let’s put these here just in case we win a Super Bowl!” No team truly thinks, “better make room for eight of these things.” But, that’s just further testament to the excellence of the Patriots.

And, I know, most of the country is going to cringe reading that, but it’s true. Don’t give me the cheaters shtick, either. That has been played to death over the last decade, and it needs to end. The Patriots are good – they have Brady. They have Belichick. They’ve had tremendous players and coaches for the last 16 years. They. Are. Good.

After all, when the Patriots opened Gillette in the 2002 NFL season, they had a single championship in their history, with it coming the year before when this guy named Tom Brady stepped into the starting quarterback role for Drew Bledsoe and helped New England upset the St. Louis Rams.

No one, not even the most optimistic supporter of the team, could have imagined that Brady and Bill Belichick would rip off another four titles.

No way – especially after the prolonged drought after the third Super Bowl title. Everyone seemed to think that was it. The New York Giants ruined the perfect season in 2007, and that seemed to be it. But, after a couple of seasons, they got back into the hunt, reloaded, and have emerged as another legitimate dynasty threat again.

Which begs the question, if it’s the same franchise…same quarterback…same coach…and they have two different collections of dynasties (three Super Bowls in four seasons), but they went 10 years in between said dynasties, does it count as TWO dynasties? Or, is it all just one big dynasty?

As esteemed media members, we may have to have this debate come next February.

Regardless, I think the solution here is simple. You just tear down Gilette Stadium, and build a bigger one with room for at least 20 Super Bowl banners. That’s what makes the most sense to me.

I’m fairly positive that Brady is a robot, and Belichick is an immortal vampire – so you can count on the Patriots winning Super Bowls until at least 2050.

But, in all seriousness, Brady playing six or seven more years? Whoa. Belichick coaching another decade? What do you guys honestly think – could this franchise get to 8 Super Bowl wins before these two retire?
